Quotations about Audio Books

Welcome to my page of quotations about audio books. Personally, I can't stand the things. I understand their value to people with impairments, but other than that I just don't get it. You can't skim or skip, or go at your own pace, or stop and savor, or re-read a fantabulous sentence five more times. Or circle a great quote, or use it to cover your face from the sun! And if I can't see the words, my mind wanders or I drift off to sleep. However, I did read something recently from an online book reviewer who mentioned the benefit of being able to roll your eyes during poorly written parts without losing your place on the page. So there's one thing in their favor. Well, that and they save trees. So maybe they're not so bad after all. Enjoy the quotes!  —ღ Terri

I just don't get how you can listen to a book. There's no fonts to look at, there's no papers to touch — they've removed two of the senses. And the truth is, sometimes I lick them, so that's three. ~Brick Heck, The Middle, “Pitch Imperfect,” 2017, written by Rich Dahm  [S8, E12]

"We will speak for the books."
"Like the Lorax?"...
"Exactly."
"The Lorax speaks for the trees," I remind her.
"Books are made out of paper. Paper is made out of trees."
"What about e-books?"
"We can speak for them, too."
"Audiobooks?"
"Audiobooks speak for themselves." She grins. "Get it?"
~Paul Acampora, I Kill the Mockingbird, 2014

Homer:  I downloaded an app! It's for those audio books!
Sluggo:  You're going to teach your ears to read?!
~Guy Gilchrist, Nancy, 2013

Audio books are a go-anywhere medium — easily slotted into the crannies of our busy lives — that can transform the dullest of life's lulls, such as traffic jams or washing the dishes, into time well spent. ~Susanne Baillie, in Quill & Quire, 1998

My Kindle reads to me Fifty Shades of Grey. It's like having an obscene phone call from Professor Stephen Hawking. ~Jerry Dennis, unverified

Once derided as the lazy man's way to read, recorded books would gradually become associated with hardworking professionals who had little time to read the old-fashioned way. Yet the question will not go away: Are these people actually reading?... Questions persist about a form of reading that can be done behind a steering wheel. ~Matthew Rubery, The Untold Story of the Talking Book, 2016

The audiobook edition I bought... was produced in 1987 and the distributor's catalog did not specify that it still comes on cassette tapes. Cassette tapes!... so I bought a black Sony Walkman for seven dollars on eBay... ~Robin Sloan, Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore, 2012

I've never listened to an audiobook before, and I have to say it's a totally different experience. When you read a book, the story definitely happens inside your head. When you listen, it seems to happen in a little cloud all around it, like a fuzzy knit cap pulled down over your eyes... ~Robin Sloan, Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore, 2012

The companionship of a voice telling stories is very special. Listening Books distributes pure, undiluted pleasure and friendship. Not many organizations can make such a claim... I’m proud and delighted to be patron of the first audiobook charity to offer downloads to its members and excited about what this will mean for all print-impaired people who can now listen on-the-go. ~Stephen Fry, www.listening-books.org.uk

Good fiction in audiobook form will really grip you, but bad fiction will talk you to sleep. ~Jef Mallett, Frazz, 2019
